Welcome to Grade 12 Chemistry!
This course is designed for students who plan to study in a post secondary science related field. The material covered is theoretically based and includes an application based laboratory component. The curriculum is quite comprehensive so we need to dive into the first unit - Organic Chemistry - immediately. Review materials (from Grade 11 Chemistry) required for the course will be distributed during the first day of class. You will be required to complete the review independently. This will be a review of scientific calculations, terminology, bonding, nomenclature, and simple stoichiometry (mole calculations and molarity.) Please prepare by looking over your grade 11 chemistry notes and visiting websites that provide review materials if you haven't taken Chemistry in over a year.
Units covered are:
Organic Chemistry
Structure and Properties of Matter
Energy Changes and Rates of Reaction
Chemical Systems and Equilibrium
Electrochemistry
Teacher Notes:
I will be updating my website on a daily basis so that you can stay on top of this course. Material missed due to any type of absence must be made up as soon as possible. There is no excuse to not know what you missed if you access this website. Completion of homework assignments, lab reports and daily participation are absolutely essential to be successful.
I realize that you are senior students who have very busy lives due to extracurricular programs, RAP and jobs. Please email me at jane.chan@peelsb.com if you need to inform me of future absences or problems. Of course I would rather you tell me in person.
Please have these materials ready for the second day of class:
3 ring binder
lined paper, blank paper, metric style graph paper (1 mm boxes)
mechanical pencils - 0.7 mm HB preferred
pens (2 colours)
ruler, eraser
scientific calculator
comprehensive periodic table (if you still have yours from Grade 11)
- the one in your agenda is NOT suitable
lab manual - preferably one with 3 whole punch and the size of letter size paper
